Trigger Point Injection
A trigger point injection is an outpatient procedure designed to reduce or relieve the back pain caused by trigger points, which are small knots that form in muscles or in the fascia tissue leading to pain caused by muscle irritation (myofascial pain).
Please play video for a more detailed understanding for what to expect during the procedure.
Please pay close attention to the following information/instructions:
A trigger point injection can help soothe muscle pain, especially in your arms, legs, lower back and neck. It also can be used to treat fibromyalgia, tension headaches and myofascial pain.
Trigger points are painful “knots” in your muscles. They form when a muscle can’t relax. Sometimes you can feel these knots when you rub your muscle.
Injecting small amounts of anesthetic and steroid into the trigger point can help alleviate the pain. The injection takes only a few minutes and is performed right in our office exam rooms. You insurance may require authorization for this procedure.
It is recommended that you stay active after you have trigger point injections. Gently move your joints through their full range of motion during the first week. Avoid strenuous activity for 3 or 4 days. Do regular stretches of the trigger point muscle.
The trigger point injection treatments are relatively safe and low-risk procedure. However, some people may experience certain side effects and/or complications from this treatment. It is advised to discuss the potential risk of developing any adverse reactions or side effects of TPI with a doctor prior to this treatment.
